1 tbsp honey
1 lemon, peeled (optional) and chopped

A bold, bitter-sweet juice. Bitter melon has a strong taste, so grapefruit, lemon and a spoon of honey balance it out.
Makes: about 2 small glasses (around 400ml). Prep: 15 minutes.
How to make it
- Cut the bitter melon in half lengthways, scoop out the seeds and pith, and chop it.
- Peel the grapefruit and split it into segments.
- Peel the lemon if you'd like a less bitter juice.
- Juice the bitter melon first, then the grapefruit and lemon.
- Stir in the honey until it dissolves.
Tips and swaps
Bitter melon, also called karela, is sold in Asian grocers and many supermarkets. Soaking the chopped melon in salted water for 10 minutes, then rinsing it, takes off some of the bitterness. Grapefruit can affect how some medicines work, so check with your pharmacist if you take regular medication.
